In SL, the principle of proportionality of the damage caused applies, which is often not the case in other leagues. This means that penalties are scaled according to the damage inflicted. For this reason, a driver who causes another driverโs retirement is disqualified from the weekend, while a driver who crashes on their own but ends up causing another driverโs retirement still receives a proportional penalty (though not a weekend disqualification). Likewise, a driver who misjudges a braking point and triggers a chain-reaction incident is penalized in proportion to the severity of the damage caused.
